UNESCO to list Japanese food as intangible cultural heritage

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- The U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is expected to register traditional Japanese food as an intangible cultural heritage asset in early December, sources close to the matter said Tuesday.
An organization that screens candidates for UNESCO registration has already issued a report recommending Japanese food be listed, they said.
A recommendation by the organization has never been rejected, a government official said.
The Japanese government proposed "Washoku: Traditional Dietary Cultures of the Japanese" for the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage list in March 2012.
UNESCO has registered four food cultures -- French, Mexican, Mediterranean and Turkish -- as such assets.
