Japan to seek investment accord with Myanmar
Japan and Myanmar will start negotiations on a bilateral investment pact.
Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba met his counterpart, Wunna Maung Lwin at Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw on Monday.
Gemba referred to his visit as a major milestone for bilateral relations. Both foreign ministers agreed to launch negotiations to promote Japanese investment to Myanmar.
Gemba also urged Myanmar to transition towards democracy, and expressed hope that its upcoming by-elections be held in a fair manner.
He said Myanmar's government must guarantee political freedom.
Wunna Maung Lwin pledged that his government will make efforts to release more political prisoners and reconcile with its people.
Gemba broached the topic of Myanmar's suspected military ties with North Korea. He said the country should refrain from taking action that will stir doubt within the international community.
Wunna Maung Lwin said his country will act in accordance with a UN Security Council resolution against North Korea.
Gemba is the first Japanese foreign minister to visit the country in 9 years.
