Japan mulls buying Chinese government bonds

Japan is considering buying Chinese government bonds for the first time.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi said at a news conference on Tuesday that purchasing each other's government bonds would benefit the 2 countries and is diplomatically important. China already buys Japanese government bonds.

Japan apparently hopes to help China make its currency, the yuan, international.

Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is expected to officially inform Chinese leaders of Japan's plan at a meeting scheduled for this Sunday.
