2011 auto sales in Japan hit lowest in 34 years
New car sales in Japan hit a 3-decade low last year as the March disaster disrupted production.
The Japan Automobile Dealers Association and other industry groups say 4.21 million cars were sold in 2011. That's down 15.1 percent from the previous year, and the lowest figure since 1977.
The groups attribute the decline to parts shortages after the earthquake and tsunami that hit eastern Japan.
The dealers association says the disaster made 2011 a tough year for the auto industry and that it hopes subsidies for eco-friendly car purchases will boost sales this year.
