TOKYO (Kyodo) -- One in three single women aged 15-39 years want to be a full-time housewife, while only one in five single men of the same age group want their spouses to be a full-time homemaker, a survey by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said Tuesday.

Asked if they want to be a full-time housewife after getting married, a total of 34.2 percent of single women said they want or somewhat want to be one, according to the survey. Those who did not want or somewhat did not want to be a full-time housewife totaled 38.5 percent.

Among single men, 19.3 percent expressed positive views about the prospect of their spouses becoming a full-time housewife, while those with negative views came to 30.2 percent.

The survey was conducted over the Internet in late March by a private think tank commissioned by the ministry. Responses came from a total of 3,133 men and women including those who were already married.

Women were also asked about the monthly take-home monthly pay they want their spouses to earn. The survey showed the largest 40.8 percent said between 200,000 and 300,000 yen followed by between 300,000 and 400,000 yen. Those who said "income does not matter" comprised 4.2 percent.
