The aim of this research project was to investigate and compare Japanese investors’ quality demand from Thai labor in service business and manufacturing industry in the Northeast and the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand. The emphasis was on quality demand concerning individual qualifications. It was found that most Japanese service business and manufacturing industry demanded qualifications which met the requirement for both professional standard and individual qualifications. As for the latter, there were both common and specific qualifications.

The common qualifications which both Japanese service business and industry required could be divided into 4 aspects:
1)  life characteristics consisting of being disciplined, responsible, punctual, patient, and devoted to organizations;
2)  mental characteristics consisting of awareness and understanding of oneself and others, and understanding of situations and environment;
3)  abilities consisting of social and communicative skills, foreign language skill, and thinking skill; and
4)  understanding Japanese work ethics.  The specific qualifications which the service business demanded were physical qualifications which were good look and dressing as well as life characteristic which was honesty.

The specific qualification which the manufacturing industry demanded was the life characteristic concerning practicality.  Two factors determined the Japanese business’ demand of both the common and specific qualifications:
1) internal factor which was Japanese organizational  culture in business administration, and
2) external factor which was business competition, resulted in the need to improve quality of products and service to ensure customers’ utmost satisfaction.
